After the success of apps like Arattai and Zoho, India’s indigenous tech movement has received another boost with Mappls, a homegrown alternative to Google Maps developed by MapmyIndia.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday tested the Swadeshi navigation application in his car and appreciated its features, urging people to try the app.
In a post on X, Vaishnaw shared his experience with the indigenous mapping platform and highlighted some of its advanced functionalities. “I met with the MAPLS team today. They told me that all Indian OEMs, car OEMs, are pre-installed inside. Let’s see how good it is,” he wrote.
He also noted the app’s 3D junction view, which provides a three-dimensional preview of overbridges and underpasses. “For instance, if we reach a place with multiple floors, Mappls can guide us to the specific shop we want to visit,” the minister said.
Vaishnaw praised the app for its innovation, saying it reflects India’s growing capability in developing world-class digital and navigation technologies.
Key features of Mappls include exact doorstep navigation, real-time driving alerts for speed limits, accident-prone areas, sharp curves, speed breakers, traffic signals, and CCTV camera locations. The app also offers a Trip Cost Calculator, which allows users to estimate fuel and toll expenses and suggests possible savings through the NHAI Fastag Annual Pass or based on vehicle and fuel type.
Designed entirely in India, Mappls is tailored for Indian roads and driving conditions, promoting safer and more precise navigation.
