India and Mauritius have reinforced their strategic partnership with commitments to infrastructure, economic cooperation, and regional security. Humanitarian Assistance and Infrastructure Development
India’s assistance in emergency situations was acknowledged, particularly its rapid response in providing humanitarian aid following Cyclone Chido in Agalega. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as a “First Responder” for Mauritius, while PM Ramgoolam welcomed India’s role in developing critical infrastructure on Agalega, including the new runway and jetty, which will aid in future disaster response and logistics.
Both countries pledged to continue their collaboration on infrastructure, including the timely delivery of 100 electric buses, the replacement of 100 km of water pipelines, and the construction of a new Parliament building and the Ganga Talao Spiritual Sanctuary.
Strengthening Political and Economic Collaboration
Both leaders noted the high level of trust and mutual understanding between their countries, reflected in frequent high-level exchanges. They recognized Mauritius’ participation as a guest country during India’s G20 Presidency as a sign of deepening engagement across various sectors.
On economic cooperation, India reaffirmed its role as Mauritius’ leading development partner. Major projects funded by India, such as the Metro Express Project, the New Supreme Court Building, and the 956 Social Housing Units, have significantly contributed to Mauritius’ infrastructure. Ramgoolam expressed gratitude for India’s continued support in shaping the nation’s progress.
Expanding Human Resource Development
Recognizing India’s contribution to Mauritius’ capacity-building efforts, both leaders committed to strengthening human resource development. The two nations agreed to implement a customized training program for 500 Mauritian civil servants over five years and to enhance institutional linkages between Mauritian and Indian institutes.
Further agreements include the continuation of technical expert deputations, expanded training programs for Mauritian officials in various government sectors, and the institutionalization of a diplomatic training program at India’s Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service.
Future Cooperation
As the relationship between India and Mauritius evolves, both leaders agreed to explore new areas of development cooperation based on Mauritius’ needs and priorities. With commitments spanning infrastructure, capacity building, and economic partnerships, the visit marked another milestone in the enduring India-Mauritius relationship, reinforcing their strategic alliance in the Indian Ocean region.
