Mauritius Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, marking the conclusion of his eight-day State Visit to India.
Welcoming PM Ramgoolam and his delegation, President Murmu said that Mauritius holds a special place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy, ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’, and its commitment to the Global South. She expressed happiness over the steady growth of the India-Mauritius partnership that reflects in the recent elevation of ties to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’.
President Murmu noted that India is supporting Mauritius’ developmental priorities through a new Special Economic Package covering hospitals, roads, port development, defence procurement, and joint surveillance. She said these projects will significantly improve infrastructure and positively impact the lives of Mauritian citizens. She added that bilateral cooperation is now expanding into emerging areas such as digital technologies and space.
Both leaders agreed that India-Mauritius relations are unique, rooted in shared history, language, culture, and values. President Murmu expressed confidence that under PM Ramgoolam’s leadership, the long-standing bilateral ties will continue to strengthen.
During his visit, Ramgoolam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 11, with both leaders reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation. He also travelled to key cultural and religious sites, including Tirumala in Tirupati, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya, and the Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. In Ayodhya, he became the second foreign Head of State to offer prayers at the Ram temple, where he and his wife Veena Ramgoolam participated in rituals and inspected ongoing construction work.
In Varanasi, the Mauritius PM witnessed the iconic Ganga Aarti on the ghats and was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel during his visit to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
Before concluding his trip, Ramgoolam paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Sadaiv Atal in New Delhi.
