On World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism launched a nationwide initiative called ‘Paryatan Mitra’ and ‘Paryatan Didi’ to promote responsible tourism across India.
The initiative, which was piloted in six key tourist destinations—Orchha (Madhya Pradesh), Gandikota (Andhra Pradesh), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Aizawl (Mizoram), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), and Sri Vijaya Puram (Andaman & Nicobar Islands)—focuses on enhancing the tourist experience. By educating those who regularly engage with tourists, such as cab drivers, hotel staff, tour guides, and street vendors, the program highlights the importance of hospitality, cleanliness, and sustainability.
Through ‘Paryatan Mitra’ and ‘Paryatan Didi’, the Ministry aims to connect tourists with locals who act as proud Ambassadors and Storytellers of their regions. Participants receive training on the value of tourism, safety, sustainability, and high-quality hospitality, all guided by the ‘Athithi Devo Bhava’ philosophy. They also learn about the unique history and cultural aspects of their areas, turning each local into a storyteller who can offer visitors a richer experience.
The program places particular focus on empowering women and youth, equipping them with skills to create new tourism offerings like heritage walks, food tours, craft experiences, nature treks, and homestays. Participants are also trained in digital tools to help promote their tourism products to a wider audience, both nationally and internationally.
Since its pilot launch on August 15, around 3,000 individuals across six destinations have completed their training, becoming Paryatan Mitras dedicated to providing visitors with a welcoming and engaging experience.
