MoD inks Rs 1,950 crore pact with BEL for IAF mountain radars system

The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 1,950 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two mountain radars for the Indian Air Force, the government said.

The deal, signed in New Delhi under the ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category, includes associated equipment and infrastructure.

The mountain radar has been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, and will be manufactured by BEL.

Officials said the induction of these systems is expected to enhance the Indian Air Force’s air defence capabilities, particularly in mountainous terrain, while reducing dependence on foreign equipment.

The procurement forms part of the government’s broader push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
