Murshidabad is burning, they are silent: CM Yogi slams opposition

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the West Bengal government over the recent violence in Murshidabad, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of remaining silent while the situation deteriorates.

Speaking at a public rally in Hardoi, Yogi said, “Bengal is burning. The Chief Minister is silent. She calls rioters ‘messengers of peace’, but those who understand only force won’t respond to mere words. In the name of secularism, the state government has given a free hand to rioters to create unrest. Murshidabad has been burning for the past week, yet there has been no response from the government. This anarchy must be brought under control.”

Yogi also expressed gratitude to the Calcutta High Court for stepping in and ordering the deployment of central forces in the violence-hit district. “I thank the judiciary for directing the immediate deployment of central forces to ensure the safety of minority Hindus in the region,” he said.

He further criticised opposition parties for their silence on the issue. “The Congress has remained mute. The Samajwadi Party is also silent,” he added.

Praising the central government’s recent legislative action, Yogi said, “I am indebted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for passing the Waqf Amendment Bill. It’s a significant step toward reclaiming land that was forcibly taken from the poor.”

The violence in Murshidabad erupted amid protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, which has become a flashpoint in the region. The demonstrations turned violent, resulting in the deaths of three people, several injuries, and widespread property damage.

The BJP has blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly supporting the protests and condemned TMC MP Bapi Halder for reportedly making threatening statements against those opposing Waqf-related land claims.

On Monday, the West Bengal police said that the situation in Murshidabad had returned to normal and urged the public not to believe in rumours.

Supratim Sarkar, ADG, South Bengal Police, said, “The situation is now under control. Everyone is safe. The CRPF, state police, and joint forces have been deployed. The DGP himself was present at Samsherganj police station. We urge people not to fall for rumours. A control room has been set up for anyone needing assistance.”
