National Crafts Museum to host ‘Worlds Within Cloth’ exhibition ahead of National Handloom Day

The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), under the Ministry of Textiles, will organise an exhibition titled ‘Worlds Within Cloth: New Orders of Woven Making’ at the Virasat Hall of the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy in New Delhi as part of the celebrations leading up to the 12th National Handloom Day on August 7.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on August 5 and will be open to the public from August 6 to 19, between 11 am and 6 pm.

Textiles Secretary Neelam Shami Rao will inaugurate the exhibition in the presence of Development Commissioner (Handlooms) M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Amrit Raj and Padma Bhushan awardee Rajeev Sethi.

Curated by Sreyansi Singh, the exhibition will showcase works by contemporary textile artists, designers and craft collectives that explore handlooms beyond their traditional material form. Through research-based works, artist-artisan collaborations and immersive installations, it will examine the social, historical and cultural dimensions of textile-making while highlighting experimentation and interdisciplinary approaches.

The exhibition will feature works by Aadyam Handwoven, Abraham & Thakore, Astha Butail, Boito, Chanakya School, Coonoor & Co., Jagrity Phukan, Jayeeta Chatterjee, Kardo, Morii, Neeraj Patel, Porgai Artisans Association, Shradha Kochhar, Shrujan, Studio Medium, Ujjal Dey and 23 N 69 E.

According to the Ministry of Textiles, the exhibition aims to present cloth as a medium of knowledge, cultural memory and creative expression while encouraging dialogue on the evolving role of textiles in issues such as identity, sustainability, community and material culture. It also seeks to highlight the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic practice through collaborations between artists, designers, artisans and craft collectives.
