National Testing Agency declares re-revised results of NEET-UG 2024

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the re-revised results and ranks for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2024 on Friday. According to the updated results, 13,15,853 candidates have qualified for the exam.

In a significant change, the number of candidates securing All India Rank (AIR) 1 has been reduced from 67 to 17. This revision comes after the Supreme Court’s decision on July 23 to uphold the validity of the exam, rejecting pleas for cancellation due to alleged paper leaks.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam, conducted on May 5, 2024, saw participation from over 24 lakh students across 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 international locations. Additionally, a re-examination was held on June 23 for 1,563 candidates who experienced time loss during the initial exam.

The Supreme Court, while acknowledging isolated incidents of paper leaks in Hazaribagh and Patna, ruled that there was no systemic breach affecting the overall integrity of the exam. The court noted that a CBI probe is ongoing, focusing on 155 students from these centers who may have benefited from the leak.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized the need for certainty and finality in the matter, given its impact on over 2 million students. The bench ruled against conducting a fresh exam, citing potential disruptions to the academic schedule and cascading effects in coming years.

“The probe by the CBI, however, has not attained finality,” it added.

The bench also said that directing a fresh NEET-UG exam for the present year would be replete with serious consequences for over 23 lakh students who appeared in this exam.

“Ordering a re-exam will lead to disruption of the academic schedule, causing a cascading effect in the coming years,” the bench stated in its order.
