Naval Science and Technological Laboratory celebrates 55th Lab Raising Day

Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) celebrated its 55th Lab Raising Day on Tuesday in the presence of senior naval officers with great zeal and enthusiasm.

Established on 20th August 1969 with 10 staff members, NSTL has grown multifold with 603 personnel, including 186 scientists, and has made significant contributions to defense R&D. It is recognized as one of the premier labs of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), engaged in the development of underwater weapons and systems.

NSTL is committed to strengthening the Indian defense sector by developing and delivering cutting-edge and futuristic technologies. In his speech, Chief Guest Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar congratulated Team NSTL on completing 55 years of journey toward empowering the nation and said that not only the Indian Navy but the entire nation has high expectations from NSTL.

He mentioned that the responsibility of NSTL has increased with its products being included in the positive indigenous list. NSTL is closely coordinating with the Indian Navy for the timely completion of projects, and the Indian Navy is eagerly awaiting the forthcoming projects.

Pendharkar added that NSTL has become a reliable partner of the Indian Navy through hard work, dedication, and tireless efforts. On this occasion, staff who completed 25 years of service were felicitated. Best Library User Appreciation awards were also distributed.

Captain AVSN Murty was presented with the prestigious Letter of Appreciation by the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), for his commendable work on naval infrared stealth.

On 5th June 2023, Combat Trials of the Varunastra Torpedo were successfully conducted by deploying the Underwater Target Structure (UWTS), which was successfully designed and developed by NSTL along with its industry partner, Trini Tech Infrastructure India Pvt. Ltd., Visakhapatnam.

This technology is being transferred to the industry partner through a licensing agreement on this auspicious occasion.

In his address, Dr. Abraham Varughese, Outstanding Scientist and Director of NSTL, said, “NSTL is putting forth its best efforts as per the requirements of the Indian Navy, with the existing world-class test facilities.” He briefed on the genesis of NSTL and its evolution to the present stage as a state-of-the-art premier naval research laboratory in the country.”
