The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has strongly condemned the brutal terror attack on unarmed civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
“NHRC is deeply disturbed by the news of the killing of 28 people by terrorists after identifying their faith in the Pahalgam area of Jammu & Kashmir on 22nd April,” the Commission said in a statement.
Calling the attack a grave violation of human rights, NHRC expressed its anguish over the targeting of innocent tourists. “The incident has shaken the conscience of every right-thinking individual, marking a serious violation of the human rights of the victims and their families,” the statement read.
Reiterating that terrorism remains one of the greatest threats to human rights globally, NHRC urged decisive action against those “aiding, abetting, supporting, and advancing” terrorism.
“It is imperative to act against those fostering terrorism. Failure to do so risks shrinking democratic space, fostering intimidation, undermining communal harmony, and leading to severe human rights violations, including threats to life, liberty, equality, and livelihood,” NHRC added.
The Commission urged the state to ensure accountability, bring the perpetrators to justice, and provide support to the victims’ families.
On April 22, terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, and injuring several others.
