Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar on Tuesday resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar, bringing an end to his long tenure spanning over two decades in the top post.
Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain following a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day.
In a post on X, Kumar said the decision to step down was taken after careful consideration, adding that he would extend full support to the incoming government.
“We have served the people of Bihar for many years. After today’s Cabinet meeting, we met the Honourable Governor and submitted our resignation. The new government will have my full cooperation and guidance,” he said.
Soon after his resignation, senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary was elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Bihar, clearing the way for him to take over as the next Chief Minister.
Reflecting on his tenure, Kumar said that since the formation of the NDA government in Bihar in November 2005, efforts had been made to ensure development across sectors and communities.
“Work has been done for all sections of society — across education, health, roads, electricity and agriculture. Special focus was also given to women and youth,” he noted.
Kumar also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting Bihar’s development, expressing confidence that the state would continue to progress and emerge among the leading states in the country.
He referred to the “7 Nishchay-3” development roadmap for 2025–2030, stating that it would further accelerate growth in the state.
Earlier this month, Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha, completing his presence across all legislative bodies — the Bihar Assembly, Bihar Legislative Council, Lok Sabha and the Upper House of Parliament. He subsequently resigned from the state Legislative Council.
Kumar had taken oath as Chief Minister for a record 10th time in 2025 after the NDA secured a two-thirds majority in the state.
