North Korea’s U-17 women’s soccer squad returns home after Asian Cup victory

North Korea’s under-17 women’s soccer team returned home on Tuesday (May 21) after taking first place at the 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-17 Women’s Asian Cup in Indonesia, state media reported.

In the video provided by North’s official news agency KCNA, which Reuters cannot independently verify, players were warmly welcomed by North Korea’s sports minister Kim Il Guk, officials and their family members at Pyongyang International Airport.

“I am very happy to present the report of victory to the respected General Secretary (Kim Jong Un),” said Jon Il Chong, who was awarded the top scorer prize.

North Korea defeated Japan 1-0 in the final on Sunday (May 19), according to the AFC website.
