Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the Northeast region has emerged as home to several global landmarks, reflecting its journey towards sustainable and inclusive development.
In a post on X, the Finance Minister said ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ has firmly established itself on the global map, citing achievements ranging from Sikkim becoming the world’s first 100 per cent organic state to engineering landmarks such as the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel and the tallest girder rail bridge.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the eight states of the Northeast, once distant from the mainstream of development, are now emerging as a major growth engine of the country.
“Today, they are brimming with prosperity, strength and possibilities,” he said in a post on X.
According to official data, the region has witnessed significant transformation over the past 12 years through sustained policy support, infrastructure expansion and inclusive development initiatives.
Improved road, rail, air and digital connectivity have enhanced regional integration and expanded economic opportunities. Access to drinking water, sanitation, housing, healthcare and education has also improved, benefiting both urban and rural communities.
The region has also emerged as an important pillar of India’s clean energy transition and the Act East Policy, supported by investments in hydropower, gas infrastructure and cross-border connectivity.
