Om Birla Stresses Mutual Respect and Dignity Amid Differences of Opinion in Democracy

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday emphasised that differences of opinion and perspective are natural in a democracy, but disagreements must be expressed with mutual respect and dignity.

Addressing the Sant Kabir Mahotsav and the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Kabir Smriti Bhawan at Kabirdham Ashram in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, Birla said Sant Kabir’s teachings highlight the importance of restraint in speech, ethical conduct and respect for others, even when opinions differ.

He said Sant Kabir’s timeless message of compassion, equality and social harmony continues to guide society even after six centuries. Wider dissemination of his teachings, he added, would promote sensitivity, mutual understanding and social harmony.

Sant Kabir’s Contribution to Social Reform

Recalling Sant Kabir’s contribution to social reform, Birla said that at a time when society was divided by caste distinctions, religious differences and social prejudices, he challenged prevailing orthodoxies and worked to break down divisive barriers.

Through simple yet profound couplets composed in the language of the common people, Sant Kabir conveyed universal messages of truth, morality, equality and righteous conduct. Birla said the enduring relevance of these teachings demonstrated their extraordinary power to inspire positive social transformation across generations.

Calls for Self-Reflection and Ethical Conduct

Highlighting the importance of introspection, Birla referred to Sant Kabir’s celebrated couplet: “बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय; जो दिल खोजा आपना, मुझसे बुरा न कोय।”

He said individuals should reflect on their own conduct and shortcomings rather than find faults in others. Such introspection fosters wisdom and humility and encourages a more compassionate approach towards fellow human beings, he added.

Birla further observed that an individual’s true legacy is determined not by position or status but by actions and contributions to society. Referring to Sant Kabir’s simple life and enduring influence, he said noble deeds, selfless service and commitment to the welfare of others leave a lasting impression on society.

Kabir Smriti Bhawan to Disseminate Sant Kabir’s Teachings

Expressing confidence that the Kabir Smriti Bhawan would disseminate Sant Kabir’s message among the people, Birla said the institution would inspire future generations to embrace his ideals.

He underscored the need to take Sant Kabir’s spiritual wisdom, people-centric outlook and rational expression to every section of society.

On the occasion, Birla paid his respects to Sant Asang Dev Ji Maharaj and appreciated his lifelong dedication to social service and the dissemination of Sant Kabir’s teachings across India and beyond.

He said the lives of saints, marked by sacrifice, discipline and selfless dedication, provide spiritual strength and inspiration to society. He also acknowledged the contributions of saints and followers who have devoted their lives to carrying forward Sant Kabir’s message.

Birla called upon everyone to draw inspiration from Sant Kabir’s teachings, practise restraint in speech, cultivate self-reflection and work towards bringing positive change in the lives of others.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, Sant Asang Dev Ji Maharaj, several public representatives, saints and a large number of followers of Sant Kabir were present on the occasion.
