Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday called upon members of the lower house to uphold the highest traditions of debate and dialogue, urging them to express dissent constructively rather than resorting to disruptions.
During a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), Speaker Birla reflected on 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution and the legacy of high-quality debates held by the founding fathers in the Constituent Assembly. He encouraged members from various political parties to engage in meaningful discussions, particularly in light of the Samvidhan Diwas celebrations set to take place in Samvidhan Sadan on Tuesday.
“Members must convey their dissent constructively and avoid creating a ruckus in the name of protest,” Speaker Birla said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum in the House.
The session witnessed disruptions earlier in the day, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being adjourned due to an impasse over opposition demands. The Houses are scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the Parliament ahead of the session, criticizing the opposition for prioritizing political interests over parliamentary practices. “Unfortunately, some individuals rejected by the public multiple times are now attempting to control Parliament through hooliganism for their own political gains,” PM Modi said.
Highlighting the importance of parliamentary dialogue, the Prime Minister added, “The message from Bharat’s Parliament must reflect the voters’ dedication to democracy, commitment to the Constitution, and trust in parliamentary practices. We, as their representatives, must embody these sentiments. It is time to reflect on the time lost and commit to thorough debates on key issues.”
PM Modi further expressed optimism for a productive winter session, adding, “This session should not only celebrate the 75th year of the Constitution but also strengthen Bharat’s global stature, provide opportunities to new MPs, and welcome innovative ideas. I invite all Members of Parliament to approach this session with enthusiasm and vigour.”
The winter session of Parliament began on Monday and will consist of 19 sittings. It carries the weight of deliberating key issues while upholding the democratic ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
