Our goal is to maintain intensity irrespective of opposition, says India’s newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill

India’s all-format batter Shubman Gill said on Thursday he wants to succeed across all formats and win ICC titles as he prepares for a packed international schedule.

After the ongoing Test series against the West Indies, Gill will continue playing in all formats – as captain in Tests and ODIs, and vice-captain in T20Is.

From October 15, when India departs for the white-ball tour of Australia, until December 19, when the all-format series against South Africa concludes, Gill will face a continuous schedule involving travel and matches. He will lead India in ODIs against Australia, play five T20Is, return to India to captain two Tests and three ODIs against South Africa, followed by a five-match T20I series.

“At times there is mental fatigue because of constant play and personal expectations. But that is the challenge – to play all formats and succeed for India,” Gill said at a pre-match press conference ahead of the second Test against West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

Gill, 26, was appointed Test captain in May and ODI captain recently. He scored 754 runs in five Tests in England earlier this year and has previously captained IPL side Gujarat Titans.

He discussed the differences in leadership across formats. “In Test matches, the better team comes out on top over 3–5 days. In T20, a few bad overs can change the game,” he said.

Gill also highlighted his working relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir, focusing on team combinations and fast-bowler development.

“Our goal is to maintain intensity and standards irrespective of the opposition. Playing for India brings its own motivation,” he added.
