Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, marking nine years of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), shared key figures underscoring the scheme’s transformative impact, particularly among underprivileged sections of society.
Taking to social media platform X on Monday, the minister aid: “9 Years of Ujjwala Yojana, over 10.33 crore families thriving!”
“The refilling of over 238 crore cylinders during the past nine years reflects the success of this scheme”, he added.
The PMUY completed its ninth anniversary on 1 May, a significant milestone in India’s effort to ensure universal access to clean cooking fuel. The scheme provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households across the country.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme has become a symbol of women’s empowerment and has significantly improved health outcomes for homemakers, the minister noted.
“In the past 10 years, the addition of 11,670 new LPG distributors has made cylinder delivery possible even in remote and challenging areas,” he said.
PMUY has transformed the lives of millions of economically disadvantaged citizens. As of March 2025, 10.33 crore households were covered under the scheme.
To expand coverage, the government launched Ujjwala 2.0 in August 2021, targeting an additional 1 crore connections. This target was achieved by January 2022, followed by the release of another 60 lakh connections, taking the total to 1.60 crore under Ujjwala 2.0 by December 2022.
As of 1 March 2025, India had 32.94 crore active domestic LPG consumers, including 10.33 crore PMUY beneficiaries.
