The Income Tax Department on Monday said that more than 7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26 as the deadline of September 15 draws to a close.
In a post on X, the Department thanked taxpayers and tax professionals for their contribution and urged those who have not filed their returns yet to complete the process at the earliest.
The Department also reassured taxpayers of round-the-clock assistance for filing returns, making tax payments, and availing other related services. Support is being provided through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media.
The clarification came after the Department dismissed reports of another extension of the deadline. On Sunday, it termed such reports as “fake news” and reiterated that September 15 remains the final date.
Earlier in May, the government had extended the deadline for non-audit cases from July 31 to September 15.
The Department said the surge in ITR filings reflects stronger tax compliance and an expanding base of taxpayers in the country.
