Indian wrestler Antim Panghal faced a tough challenge at the Paris Olympics, bowing out in the women’s 53 kg freestyle round of 16 bout on Wednesday. Panghal was defeated by Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil, a U23 European Championship bronze medallist, who secured victory on technical superiority, according to Olympics.com.
Despite the loss, Panghal’s Olympic journey may not be over. If Yetgil advances to the final, Panghal will have a chance to compete for a bronze medal through the repechage rounds scheduled for tomorrow, August 8.
Earlier in the day, the Indian marathon race walk mixed relay team, comprising Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami, could not finish the final of their event. Their campaign was cut short at the 33.4 km mark, just after the third exchange, due to multiple infractions involving loss of contact and bent knee issues.
The marathon race walk mixed relay is known for its demanding nature. Spain’s Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez clinched the gold with a time of 2:50:31, while Ecuador and Australia took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In another setback for India, javelin thrower Annu Rani, who holds the national record, failed to qualify for the final. Rani finished 15th in Group A, falling short of the qualification standard of 62.00 meters.
