Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday called on Indian industry to make the most of the country’s expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs) with developed economies, stressing that a sustained focus on quality would be key to unlocking their full potential. He said India has signed nine FTAs with 38 developed nations in recent years, offering preferential access to nearly two-thirds of global trade.
Addressing the National CSR Announcement for FY 2026–27 and scholarship distribution launch by Malabar Charitable Trust, Goyal said the agreements have opened global markets for Indian goods and services at reduced or zero duties, giving exporters a competitive edge. He noted that MSMEs, farmers, fishermen and artisans stand to benefit significantly from the expanded access, provided they meet global quality standards.
The minister also highlighted the importance of corporate social responsibility, praising the commitment of allocating 5 per cent of net profits towards CSR as a step beyond statutory requirements. He said such initiatives reflect a deeper culture of voluntary charity embedded in Indian society, adding that efforts going beyond mandated norms indicate genuine intent and should focus on tangible delivery rather than future pledges.
Referring to inclusive development, Goyal said the government remains committed to ensuring access to basic services such as food, housing, healthcare, education, electricity, water and digital connectivity for all citizens. He underlined that these measures are aimed at enabling wider participation in the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
He also stressed women-led development, recalling B. R. Ambedkar’s view that communities progress when women prosper. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, efforts have been made to promote education and empowerment of girls.
Goyal pointed to the need for unity and collective effort, citing the spirit of solidarity witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and urged stakeholders to work together to achieve national goals. Despite global challenges affecting trade and logistics, he said India remains focused on strengthening its economic engagement.
He also emphasised skilling, language training and quality education as key to enhancing global opportunities for India’s youth. Commending the initiative, he said around 33,000 children will benefit from scholarships under the programme, which he said would help expand access to opportunities and support the country’s development journey.
