Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited an exhibition in Chandigarh on Tuesday, showcasing the implementation of India’s new criminal laws.
During the visit, officials provided detailed briefings to both leaders on the successful nationwide rollout of the three new laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The exhibition emphasized the transformative impact these laws are having on the country’s criminal justice system.
A key highlight of the programme was a live demonstration simulating a crime scene investigation under the new legal frameworks. This practical application shows the effectiveness of the laws in addressing contemporary challenges, such as cybercrime and organized crime, while ensuring justice for victims.
The event was themed “Secure Society, Developed India – From Punishment to Justice” to reflect the shift in focus from punitive measures to a justice-oriented approach. According to an official release, this transformation aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of replacing colonial-era laws with modern frameworks tailored to the needs of a progressive and secure India.
Implemented on July 1, 2024, the new criminal laws represent a historic overhaul of India’s judicial system. They aim to enhance transparency, efficiency, and adaptability, ensuring the legal system is equipped to tackle the complexities of modern society.
