PM Modi arrives for India-Nordic Summit to script new chapter in diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday arrived at the venue of the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, marking a fresh phase of diplomatic and economic engagement between India and the Nordic region.

PM Modi reached the Norwegian capital on Monday after concluding bilateral engagements in Sweden as part of his four-nation European tour. The visit also carries historic significance, as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years since former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited the country in 1983.

The summit brings together leaders from the five Nordic nations, including Iceland Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, Norway Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Sweden Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

During the summit, the leaders are expected to deliberate on a range of bilateral and multilateral issues, with discussions focused on economic cooperation, global challenges, trade expansion, technology partnerships and investment opportunities.

The meeting follows the earlier India-Nordic Summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022.

Highlighting the economic significance of the visit, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the Prime Minister’s trip is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment ties between India and the Nordic countries. The ministry also noted that the engagements would contribute to building resilient supply chains in the backdrop of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations and the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

The summit agenda includes discussions on trade, renewable energy, defence cooperation, technology and global issues, reflecting a shared focus on sustainable economic growth and strategic collaboration between India and the Nordic region.
