Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the United States for a two-day visit, during which he is set to hold key meetings with US President Donald Trump, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
PM Modi’s visit, at the invitation of President Trump, marks his first trip to the US since Trump began his second term in office. Upon arrival in Washington DC, the Prime Minister was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other senior officials.
In a statement on social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm about strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, saying, “Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet.”
The highlight of PM Modi’s visit will be his bilateral meeting with President Trump at the White House, followed by a joint press statement and a dinner hosted by the US President later tonight.
PM Modi’s meeting with NSA Michael Waltz, who chairs the US-India Caucus, is expected to focus on enhancing strategic cooperation between the two nations. Waltz has previously emphasized India’s importance in US strategic interests, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had held discussions with him in December on bilateral partnerships and global challenges.
A significant meeting with Elon Musk is also on the agenda. Musk, who now serves as a special US government employee heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is expected to discuss the expansion of Starlink’s satellite broadband services in India. This comes after Indian authorities had seized two Starlink devices in December, one in an armed conflict zone and another during a drug smuggling operation. Discussions may also include increasing Tesla’s sourcing of electric vehicle components from India, although Tesla’s potential entry into the Indian market remains uncertain.
PM Modi will also meet Indian-origin entrepreneur and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy, who had briefly entered the US presidential race before withdrawing and endorsing Donald Trump. Known for his dynamic debate performances, Ramaswamy had described Trump as the “best president of the 21st century.”
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi highlighted that this visit would build on the successes of his previous collaborations with President Trump, focusing on strengthening ties in technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience. “We will work together for the mutual benefit of our two countries and shape a better future for the world,” PM Modi said.
