Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office and surpassing the record held by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The milestone marks 12 years of the Modi-led government at the Centre. Modi, who first assumed office in May 2014, secured successive electoral mandates in 2019 and 2024, becoming the first Prime Minister after Nehru to win three consecutive terms.
For the purpose of the comparison, Nehru’s tenure is counted from 1952, following India’s first general elections. He had earlier headed the country’s interim government from 1947 until the elections were held.
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served in office for more than 14 years, her tenure was not continuous. Modi is now the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.
During his tenure, the government has undertaken several major infrastructure and development projects, including the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
To mark the occasion and celebrate 12 years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, the ruling coalition is scheduled to hold a meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Senior Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are expected to participate in the event along with other NDA leaders.
The meeting is also expected to review the alliance’s achievements over the past 12 years and discuss governance priorities, development initiatives and preparations for upcoming electoral contests.
