Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday strongly condemned an “attack” on Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai, expressing solidarity with the country’s senior-most judge and commending his composure following the incident inside the Supreme Court.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.”
He added, “I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to the values of justice and to strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”
Earlier on Monday morning, a man dressed in a lawyer’s robe allegedly attempted to disrupt proceedings in the Supreme Court by throwing an object toward the CJI Gavai-led bench. The proceedings were briefly interrupted, but Justice Gavai remained composed and continued the hearing without pause.
“Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” the CJI said, maintaining decorum in the courtroom.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) passed a unanimous resolution expressing “deep anguish and disapproval” over the incident, terming it an act of disrespect toward the judiciary.
Describing the conduct as “unbecoming of a member of the Bar”, SCAORA said it “strikes at the very foundation of mutual respect that sustains the relationship between the Bench and the Bar.”
The resolution further noted, “This behaviour is antithetical to the dignity of the legal profession and contrary to the Constitutional values of decorum, discipline, and institutional integrity.”
