Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Thursday accepted the prestigious ‘Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados’ on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award was presented by Barbados President Dame Sandra Mason in recognition of PM Modi’s strategic leadership and critical assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ceremony, held at the Government House in Bridgetown, was attended by Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds, and other dignitaries. Margherita, in a post on X, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Honoured to receive, on behalf of PM Narendra Modi, the ‘Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados’ from President Dame Sandra Mason, in the presence of PM Mia Amor Mottley and other dignitaries. This award acknowledges PM Modi’s leadership and invaluable assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the award was announced during the second India-CARICOM Leaders’ Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, on November 20, 2024. At the summit, Prime Minister Mottley lauded PM Modi’s role in strengthening international cooperation and extending crucial support during the global crisis.
While accepting the honor, Margherita emphasized the deepening ties between India and Barbados. “It is a profound honor to represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi and receive this prestigious award on his behalf. This recognition underscores the strong partnership between India and Barbados, built on collaboration and mutual support, especially in challenging times,” he stated.
The MEA further highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relations between India and Barbados since 1966, saying that the award symbolizes the enduring friendship and shared commitment to global development.
