Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on securing a second consecutive term as Prime Minister, following a resounding victory in Australia’s federal elections.
In a post on X, PM Modi lauded Albanese’s leadership and expressed confidence in further strengthening bilateral ties. “Congratulations @AlboMP on your resounding victory and re-election as Prime Minister of Australia! This emphatic mandate indicates the enduring faith of the Australian people in your leadership. I look forward to working together to further deepen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and advance our shared vision for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” PM Modi said.
Albanese, leader of the center-left Labor Party, claimed victory earlier on Saturday after his party swept the national polls, securing enough seats to retain majority in the 151-member House of Representatives. His win marks the first time in 21 years that an Australian Prime Minister has secured a second consecutive three-year term.
Addressing supporters in Sydney, Albanese delivered a speech marked by national pride and self-reliance. “Australians have chosen to face global challenges the Australian way, looking after each other while building for the future,” he said. “We do not need to beg or borrow or copy from anywhere else. We do not seek our inspiration overseas. We find it right here in our values and in our people.”
The victory is seen as a strong endorsement of Albanese’s leadership during his first term, during which he focused on economic recovery, climate policy, and international diplomacy. If the Labor Party’s increased majority is confirmed, it will provide Mr. Albanese with greater legislative flexibility in his second term.
