President Murmu, PM Modi congratulate Indian women’s football team on SAFF Championship triumph

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian women’s football team on winning the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 title, praising the players for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

India reclaimed the SAFF Women’s Championship crown after seven years with a commanding 3-1 victory over defending champions Bangladesh in the final at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, on Saturday.

Extending her congratulations, President Murmu lauded the team’s skill, determination and teamwork, expressing confidence that the achievement would inspire young girls across the country to pursue their dreams with confidence and courage.

“Heartiest congratulations to the Indian Women’s Football Team on winning the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026! Our women footballers displayed exceptional skill, determination and teamwork throughout the tournament. I am confident that their remarkable achievement will inspire young girls across the nation to pursue their dreams with confidence and courage,” the President posted on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the team’s triumph, noting that they had played exceptionally well throughout the competition. He said the victory would encourage more youngsters to take up football in the years to come.

“Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Football Team on winning the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026. They have played excellently through the tournament. This will encourage more youngsters to play football in the coming times. Best wishes to the team for their future endeavours,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

The title triumph marks another significant milestone for Indian women’s football and is expected to further boost the sport’s growing popularity across the country.
