During his visit to Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri) Cubes to the Ukrainian government on Friday. The humanitarian gesture was met with gratitude from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who thanked India for its continued support in providing crucial aid during challenging times.
The BHISHM Cubes, designed under India’s Project Aarogya Maitri, are tailored to offer swift and effective medical assistance in emergency situations. Each cube is equipped to handle a variety of medical emergencies, including trauma, burns, fractures, and bleeding, and includes surgical equipment capable of managing 10 to 15 basic surgeries daily. The cubes are also designed to generate their own power and oxygen, enhancing their functionality in the field.
Prime Minister Modi shared images of the cubes on his X handle, describing them as a unique initiative aimed at ensuring rapid deployment of medical facilities. “Today, I presented BHISHM cubes to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” Modi said, highlighting the importance of the initiative in delivering critical care in challenging environments.
The BHISHM Cube is a comprehensive medical unit, consisting of two “mother cubes” packed with essential medicines, surgical tools, and equipment. These cubes are organized in a way that makes them easy to transport and deploy in various scenarios, whether by air, sea, land, or drone. The design allows for multi-modal transport, with the cubes weighing a manageable 20 kg each, enabling them to be carried by an individual if necessary.
One mother cube focuses on first-line care, addressing all kinds of injuries and medical emergencies, and includes provisions for shelter and food for a team of five for up to 48 hours. The other mother cube is dedicated to establishing a basic operating room, equipped to handle up to 15 surgeries per day.
In addition to their comprehensive medical supplies, the BHISHM Cubes feature an advanced inventory management system that utilizes RFID technology, ensuring that stock levels are always up-to-date. A dedicated BHISHM app and digital tablet, which currently supports about 180 languages, provide operators with access to instructional videos and essential medical know-how.
The deployment of BHISHM Cubes to Ukraine underscores India’s ongoing commitment to providing humanitarian aid to nations in need. A team of experts from India has been dispatched to Ukraine to offer initial training to local personnel, ensuring that the cubes are used effectively to save lives.
