Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool in Port Louis on Tuesday, presenting him with holy water from the Ganga, collected during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh.
The sacred water, drawn from the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, symbolizes India’s spiritual and civilizational heritage. This year’s Maha Kumbh witnessed a record-breaking gathering of over 660 million pilgrims, making it the largest human congregation in history.
President Gokhool, who was unanimously elected in December 2024, succeeded Prithvirajsing Roopun. A seasoned statesman and former Minister of Education, Gokhool has had a distinguished career spanning academia, public service, and politics. In honor of PM Modi’s visit, he is hosting a State lunch, further cementing the close ties between the two nations.
PM Modi’s engagements in Mauritius began with a tribute to the country’s founding leaders. At the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Port Louis, he paid homage to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, and former President and Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth. In a message on X, he acknowledged their lasting contributions to Mauritius’ progress.
Alongside Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi also participated in a tree-planting ceremony as part of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative. Expressing gratitude for Ramgoolam’s involvement, he described the gesture as a tribute to nature, motherhood, and sustainability.
