PM Modi hails Indian contingent’s record medal haul at World Para-Athletics Championships

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian contingent for their historic performance at the World Para-Athletics Championships 2025, held at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from September 23 to October 5, saying their “success will inspire several people.”

For the first time, host India achieved a record 22 medals – including six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze – marking their best-ever performance at the championships. In comparison, India had won nine medals at Dubai 2019, ten at Paris 2023, and 17 at Kobe 2024.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “A historic performance by our para-athletes! This year’s World Para-Athletics Championships have been very special. The Indian contingent had its best-ever performance, winning 22 medals, including 6 Gold Medals.”

“Congrats to our athletes. Their success will inspire several people. I am proud of each and every member of our contingent and wish them the very best for their future endeavours,” he added.

By successfully hosting the World Para-Athletics Championships 2025, India joined the ranks of elite global sporting organisers. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium witnessed participation from more than 2,200 athletes representing over 100 nations, competing across 186 medal events.

“Hosting the tournament in Delhi has also been an honour for India. Gratitude to athletes and support staff from almost 100 nations who were a part of the tournament,” the Prime Minister further said.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan also congratulated the Indian para-athletes for their historic performance.

In a post on X, Vice President said, “Congratulations to Team India on their historic performance at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025. With a record tally of 22 medals on home soil, our para-athletes have inspired the nation with their resilience, spirit, and determination.”

“This achievement is a proud milestone for the nation and a strong foundation for the future growth of para-sports in India. I hope it will further strengthen the movement for inclusivity and excellence in sports,” he added.

At WPAC 2025, 15 medal winners were part of the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), while one athlete came from the Khelo India programme. In total, 23 TOPS athletes and 22 Khelo India athletes represented India at the championships.
