PM Modi hails remarkable growth in India’s handloom sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised Union Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, for highlighting the impressive progress of India’s handloom sector.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office shared Margherita’s article that described how India is weaving heritage, innovation, and collective effort into a global success story.

“Union Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, writes about the growth of the textile sector in Bharat. He explains how, by weaving together heritage, innovation and collective effort, India’s handloom sector stands poised to inspire the world,” the PMO stated.

With National Handloom Day just a day away, Margherita reflected on the transformation of India’s textile industry, crediting a series of focused interventions by the Union government. He said this vision, led by Prime Minister Modi, is aimed at making handlooms an integral part of everyday life.

“With one day to go for National Handloom Day, I write on the growth of the textile sector in Bharat owing to a series of targeted interventions from the Union government and as envisioned by our Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi to make handlooms a key part of our daily lives,” Margherita posted on X.

The Minister also acknowledged the role of Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, expressing pride in the country’s rich weaving legacy and the promising future for Indian artisans.

“From the looms of North East India to innovations in AI-driven design, the story of India’s handlooms reflects resilience, empowerment, and boundless creativity,” he added.

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement launched on the same date in 1905, which played a pivotal role in promoting indigenous industries, particularly handloom weaving. The first National Handloom Day was celebrated in 2015, with Prime Minister Modi inaugurating the event in Chennai.
