PM Modi highlights role of healthcare initiatives in boosting public health and economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the growing recognition of India’s healthcare transformation as a major pillar of national development. Referring to a recent article by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, the Prime Minister pointed out that flagship initiatives like Ayushman Bharat, POSHAN Abhiyaan, and Swachh Bharat are not only improving public health outcomes but are also contributing to economic growth.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister quoted Dr. Shetty, saying, “India’s healthcare is now a key driver of economic growth. Initiatives like Ayushman Bharat, POSHAN Abhiyaan and Swachh Bharat are reducing disease, protecting household savings, and building human capital. Seeing health as an investment, not a cost, is boosting governance and prosperity.”

The article titled “Tying Health to Productivity” explains how India’s healthcare policies under Prime Minister Modi have shifted from a purely welfare-oriented approach to becoming a driver of economic development. It highlights that investments in healthcare through programs such as Ayushman Bharat, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, emergency ambulance services, nutrition initiatives, maternal and child health programs, and sanitation drives help reduce disease burden, protect household savings, and enhance human capital.

According to Dr. Shetty, treating healthcare as an investment rather than an expense ensures better long-term outcomes. Programs like Ayushman Bharat provide health insurance to economically vulnerable citizens, protecting them from catastrophic medical bills while encouraging preventive care. Nutrition, sanitation, and maternal and child health programs also improve cognitive development and workforce capacity, reinforcing the idea that public health is closely linked to productivity and economic prosperity.
