Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong, visited the semiconductor facility of AEM Holdings Ltd in Singapore on Thursday, underlining the growing cooperation between the two nations in advanced technology sectors.
During the visit, PM Modi extended an invitation to Singapore’s semiconductor companies to participate in the upcoming SEMICON INDIA exhibition, scheduled to be held in Greater Noida from September 11-13, 2024. This move highlights India’s push to develop its semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and leverage Singapore’s expertise in this critical sector.
In a press release, MEA stated, “Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association gave a briefing on the development of semiconductor ecosystem in Singapore and opportunities for collaboration with India.”
“Representatives of several other Singaporean companies from this sector were also present. Prime Minister invited the Singaporean semiconductor companies to participate in SEMICON INDIA exhibition to be held in Greater Noida on 11-13 September 2024,” it added.
The two leaders were briefed about AEM’s role in the global semiconductor value chain, its operations, and future plans for India. The Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association also presented on the development of the semiconductor ecosystem in Singapore and potential collaboration opportunities with India.
Furthermore, India and Singapore have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in advanced manufacturing, with a focus on semiconductors. This agreement was reached during the second meeting of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable. Both countries have also concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership.
PM Modi and PM Wong also interacted with Indian interns from Odisha’s World Skill Centre undergoing training in Singapore, as well as Singaporean interns who had visited India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme. This interaction underscores the growing skills partnership between the two nations.
In a post on X, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “India-Singapore Skills Partnership Going Strong. During the visit to AEM Holdings, PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST also interacted with Indian interns from Odisha’s World Skill Center visiting Singapore as well as Singaporean interns who had visited India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme and Indian engineers working at AEM.”
Earlier in the day, the two Prime Ministers held bilateral talks focused on boosting cooperation in various sectors, including skilling, technology, healthcare, and artificial intelligence. “We both agreed on the need to boost trade relations,” PM Modi said in a post on social media platform X.
The day also saw the exchange of four significant MoUs between India and Singapore. These agreements cover collaboration in digital technologies, partnership in the semiconductor sector, joint initiatives in health and medicine, and cooperation in education and skills development. The MoUs were exchanged at Singapore’s Parliament House by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Singapore’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan.
