PM Modi meets Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome, discusses AI, space and strategic cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome and discussed ways to further strengthen the India-Italy partnership across sectors including trade, investment, technology, artificial intelligence, clean energy and culture.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Met President Sergio Mattarella in Rome. We discussed different aspects relating to the India-Italy friendship, including trade, investment and cultural linkages. We talked about how our nations can collaborate in areas such as AI, critical minerals, space and nuclear energy.”

Sharing details of the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “PM Narendra Modi called on President Sergio Mattarella of the Italian Republic. The two leaders reaffirmed the strong and enduring India-Italy partnership and held discussions in areas including trade, technology, innovation, clean energy, AI and culture.”

PM Modi is currently on an official visit to Italy aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and strengthening strategic engagement between the two countries.

Earlier, PM Modi said he had an informal interaction with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni soon after arriving in Rome.

“Upon landing in Rome, had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner followed by a visit to the iconic Colosseum. We exchanged perspectives on a wide range of subjects. Looking forward to our talks today, where we will continue the conversation on how to boost the India-Italy friendship,” PM Modi had said.

The Prime Minister also said that the visit would focus on strengthening cooperation under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and reviewing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 between the two nations.

“This visit will focus on how to boost India-Italy cooperation, especially focusing on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 will also be reviewed,” PM Modi said.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization to reaffirm India’s commitment to multilateralism and global food security.
