Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a cordial meeting with United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, expressing his joy at the interaction by referring to him as “my brother.”
The meeting with the UAE President underscored the growing ties between the two nations, following their previous interaction in Abu Dhabi in February 2024. Sharing photos of their meeting on X, PM Modi wrote, “Glad to have met my brother, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan.”
Additionally, the Indian Prime Minister engaged in discussions with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Describing the meeting as “wonderful,” PM Modi emphasized the focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and cultural exchanges. “Had a wonderful meeting with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Kazan. Discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation between India and Uzbekistan, including trade and cultural linkages,” he shared on X.
PM Modi also posted pictures from the summit, highlighting the significance of new BRICS members joining the bloc. “With fellow BRICS leaders at the summit in Kazan, Russia. This summit is special because we welcomed the new BRICS members. This forum has immense potential to make our planet better and more sustainable,” he said.
During a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, PM Modi stressed the importance of stable India-China relations, emphasizing their impact on regional and global peace. “India-China relations are important for the people of our countries and for regional and global peace and stability,” PM Modi said.
Following his participation at the BRICS Summit, PM Modi departed for Delhi on Tuesday evening. Alongside his participation in the summit’s discussions, he held bilateral meetings with several global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and President Xi Jinping.
The summit saw the BRICS leaders engage in productive dialogue on critical global issues, focusing on multilateralism, counter-terrorism efforts, sustainable development, and the economic concerns of the Global South. The group also welcomed 13 new partner countries into the BRICS family.
During the summit sessions, PM Modi emphasized the need for a people-centric approach to tackle current global challenges, including conflicts, climate impacts, and cyber threats. He reiterated the importance of adopting a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations to combat terrorism.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s contributions to economic growth, including initiatives related to trade, supply chains, and green energy. He invited BRICS members to join India’s efforts, including the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE.
PM Modi’s visit to Russia for the summit marks his second visit in three months, following his participation in the annual bilateral summit with Russia in April. At the conclusion of the summit, the leaders adopted the ‘Kazan Declaration’ and passed the BRICS presidency to Brazil for the coming year.
