Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the bravehearts who laid down their lives for the country, at the National War Memorial, marking the commencement of the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. The prime minister was accompanied by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
After laying the wreath, Commander Amit Rathi, leading the Inter-Services Guard, comprising 21 inner guards and 6 buglers, issued the command for Salami Shastra, followed by the command for Shok Shastra. The haunting sound of the ‘Last Post’ resonated through the air as officers in uniform saluted in reverence, and the entire gathering observed a two-minute silence to honor the fallen soldiers.
President Droupadi Murmu then unfurled the national flag and led the nation in commemorating the historic day. Accompanying her was Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the chief guest for this year’s festivities.
In line with tradition, both Presidents were escorted to Kartavya Path by the President’s Bodyguard, the seniormost regiment of the Indian Army, known as ‘Rashtrapati ke Angarakshak.’ Reviving a tradition discontinued for 40 years, they arrived in the ‘Traditional Buggy,’ adding a regal charm to the celebrations.
Upon their arrival, the Presidents were warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister also greeted Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh Dhankhar at Kartavya Path.
The National Flag was unfurled to the strains of the National Anthem, followed by a thunderous 21-gun salute performed using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns.
