Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 135th birth anniversary.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”
Several Congress leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, also paid their respects to Nehru.
Born on November 14, 1889, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Nehru served as India’s first Prime Minister from August 15, 1947, until his death on May 27, 1964. His pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and leadership in shaping the nation has left a lasting legacy.
Fondly referred to as ‘Chacha Nehru,’ he was known for his affection for children. In his honour, Children’s Day is celebrated on November 14 each year.
Until 1956, India observed Children’s Day on November 20, in line with the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day. However, after Nehru’s death, Parliament passed a resolution to commemorate his birth anniversary as Children’s Day in his memory.
