PM Modi pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Victoria, offers prayers at Seychelles’ Tamil temple

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Peace Park in Victoria and offered prayers at the historic Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple during his state visit to Seychelles, underscoring the deep cultural, spiritual and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Peace Park in Victoria. Bapu’s ideals transcend generations, uniting people in the pursuit of peace, justice and human dignity. His thoughts continue to inspire our collective endeavour for a better world.”

The visit to the Peace Park highlighted the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in Seychelles, where his statue stands alongside those of other globally respected leaders as a symbol of peace and harmony.

The Prime Minister also visited a Hindu temple in Seychelles.

“Prayed at the Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple in Victoria, the prominent Hindu temple of Seychelles. May Bhagwan Shri Ganesh bless everyone with wisdom, strength and prosperity,” he said.

“I would like to appreciate the Seychelles Hindu Kovil Sangam for their efforts towards the building of the Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple and for popularising different aspects of Indian culture and spirituality in Seychelles,” the Prime Minister added.

The temple visit formed part of the Prime Minister’s engagements aimed at strengthening the centuries-old civilisational and cultural links between India and Seychelles, which is home to a vibrant Indian-origin community.

On Sunday, PM Modi participated as the Guest of Honour in the National Day celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of Seychelles’ Independence.

“Honoured to participate in the National Day celebrations of Seychelles, marking the Golden Jubilee of the nation’s Independence. The occasion was a fitting tribute to the remarkable journey of the Seychellois people over the past fifty years. India is proud to stand alongside Seychelles as a trusted friend and partner in its development journey. Our partnership continues to grow stronger with shared values and closer people-to-people ties. I am confident our friendship will grow even further in the times to come,” he said.

The Prime Minister also thanked Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, the Government and the people of Seychelles for inviting him to participate in the landmark celebrations.

Sharing pics from the event, PM Modi said, “Some more pictures from the Seychelles National Day celebrations. I thank President Dr. Patrick Herminie, the Government and people of Seychelles for inviting me to be a part of this special occasion.”

Highlighting the close defence cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister noted that contingents from the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy participated in the National Day parade.

“Contingents from the Assam Regiment and the Indian Navy took part in the National Day celebrations of Seychelles yesterday. It was yet another reflection of the enduring friendship between India and Seychelles,” he said.
