Muharram reminds us of the values of courage, sacrifice, compassion and steadfast commitment to truth and justice. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is regarded as one of the holiest periods in Islam and marks the beginning of the Islamic or Hijri New Year. The word “Muharram” means “forbidden,” reflecting its status as one of Islam’s four sacred months during which warfare is traditionally prohibited. The month reaches its spiritual culmination on the 10th day, known as Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and his companions during the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq in 680 CE.
