Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday received Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi and underlined that peace and tranquillity along the border remain essential for advancing bilateral ties between India and China.
Wang, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, conveyed a message and an invitation from President Xi Jinping for Prime Minister Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. The Prime Minister accepted the invitation and expressed support for China’s presidency of the summit, adding that he looked forward to meeting President Xi during the event.
During the meeting, PM Modi welcomed what he described as “steady and positive progress” in bilateral relations since his discussions with Xi in Kazan last year. He noted that ties had been guided by principles of mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, and referred to the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra as a step forward in people-to-people exchanges.
In a post on X, PM said, “Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity,” he said.
Reiterating India’s position on the boundary issue, the Prime Minister said that a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution remained essential for building a stable relationship. He stressed that stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China would not only serve both nations but also contribute to peace and prosperity in the region and beyond.
Wang Yi, during his visit, also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and co-chaired the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives on boundary talks with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
