Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, scheduled from January 28 to February 14, 2025.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that PM Modi has agreed to open the event, following an invitation from the state government. Dhami also mentioned that they invited the PM to attend the winter yatra, which will coincide with the games.
The event will bring together over 10,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from across India, competing in 38 sports disciplines across multiple cities in Uttarakhand. This marks the first time the state will host the National Games, after being announced as the host in December 2023.
IOA President PT Usha expressed her excitement about the inclusion of both traditional and modern sports in the games, with demonstration sports like kalarippayattu, yogasana, mallakhambh, and rafting.
“This reflects our commitment to honoring India’s rich heritage while offering new opportunities for athletes,” she said.
The 38th edition will feature 32 competitive disciplines and four demonstration events, highlighting India’s sporting diversity. The National Games bring together athletes from all states and Union Territories to compete in an Olympic-style event.
Following the Goa 2023 edition, which saw Maharashtra top the medal tally, the Uttarakhand games are expected to strengthen the state’s position as a sports and tourism hub. The inclusion of traditional sports alongside Olympic disciplines reflects India’s growing commitment to fostering both modern and heritage sports.
