PM Modi to inaugurate second phase of Ahmedabad Metro, Connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar

Gujarat is on the verge of a major advancement in public transportation with the launch of the highly anticipated Metro Rail Extension, according to an official release.

Developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in partnership with the Government of Gujarat and the Government of India, this project aims to expand the metro network, connecting key locations between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The new extension will link crucial areas such as GNLU, PDEU, Gift City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector-1.

The Metro’s second phase is expected to improve connectivity between the two cities, offering faster, safer, and more affordable travel options. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially inaugurate the phase on September 16, 2024, marking the commencement of operations. This new stretch, running from Motera to Gandhinagar’s Sector-1, will serve key hubs like GIFT City, bringing enhanced mobility for professionals, students, and tourists.

Covering a distance of 21 kilometres, this phase includes eight new stations, providing seamless transportation to residential and commercial areas. The Metro Rail Extension will offer both affordability and time efficiency, making it an appealing alternative to private vehicles as fuel prices rise and traffic congestion increases.

For example, the Metro journey from APMC to Gandhinagar’s Sector-1, approximately 33 km, takes just 65 minutes and costs ₹35. In comparison, taxis can take over 80 minutes and cost more than ₹415, while autorickshaws charge around ₹375 for the same route. The Metro’s affordable fares and reliable travel times are set to make it a popular choice for daily commuters, especially those working in Gandhinagar and GIFT City.

The Metro’s reliance on clean energy and efficient design will reduce the region’s carbon footprint, offering a more sustainable alternative to private transportation. The service is also expected to ease traffic congestion on Ahmedabad’s busy roads, cutting down on pollution and reducing the strain on existing infrastructure.

The release further highlights the social and economic benefits the new stations will bring, especially in expanding commercial centres around GIFT City and Infocity. Professionals in these areas will now have access to a fast, affordable commute, boosting productivity and business growth.

The Metro extension is also projected to spur real estate development, with increased demand for housing and commercial spaces around the new stations. As connectivity improves, investment opportunities and urban growth are expected to flourish. Additionally, the savings in time and money for commuters, coupled with the reduced need for personal vehicles, are likely to improve the quality of life for residents.

Looking ahead, the Metro expansion is part of a broader strategy to create a robust and sustainable urban transport network in Gujarat. Plans for further extensions and enhancements are already underway, aiming to build a fully integrated system that will serve the region for years to come.
