Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the celebrations marking the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on January 14 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The Prime Minister, scheduled to address the gathering at 10:30 AM, will also launch the ‘Mission Mausam,’ aimed at making India a ‘Weather-ready and Climate-smart’ nation.
Mission Mausam seeks to transform India’s weather forecasting capabilities by integrating advanced technologies and systems. The mission will focus on the development of cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies, including next-generation radars, satellites, high-performance computing, and high-resolution atmospheric observations. Through these measures, the initiative intends to improve the nation’s understanding of weather and climate processes, provide real-time air quality data, and enhance long-term weather management strategies.
In addition to launching Mission Mausam, PM Modi will release the IMD Vision-2047 document, which outlines strategies for weather resilience and climate change adaptation. The document focuses on enhancing weather forecasting capabilities, managing weather-related challenges, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
The celebrations will highlight IMD’s role in climate resilience and its contributions over the past 150 years in providing critical weather and climate services. A series of events, workshops, and activities have been organized to showcase IMD’s achievements and its continued efforts to help the country adapt to changing climate conditions.
