PM Modi to launch projects worth Rs 3,350 crore in Ladakh on October 15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and dedicate five development projects worth around ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh on October 15, covering airport infrastructure, strategic road connectivity, hydropower, heritage conservation and water security.

PM Modi will address the gathering through video conferencing at around 12.30 pm.

The projects include a new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, built at a cost of ₹640 crore. Spread across 23,800 square metres, the terminal is designed to handle 35 lakh passengers annually.

The facility incorporates geothermal energy to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint. Combining modern passenger amenities with elements of Ladakh’s cultural heritage, it is intended to improve travel convenience and strengthen air connectivity.

PM Modi will also dedicate the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation. Connecting Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the Zanskar Valley, it provides an alternative route to Ladakh alongside the Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways.

The road traverses challenging Himalayan terrain, including Shinkun La Pass, and will enhance operational mobility and logistical support for the Armed Forces. It will also improve access to healthcare, education, markets and essential services for Zanskar residents.

To strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the 9-MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66-kV double-circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi transmission line. These will support power evacuation and improve the reliability of Ladakh’s electricity network.

India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh will also be inaugurated. The park will provide a dedicated space to protect Ladakh’s prehistoric rock carvings, raise public awareness and promote responsible heritage tourism.

The region’s hundreds of rock art sites feature wildlife, human figures and symbolic representations, offering insights into thousands of years of human history.

PM Modi will additionally inaugurate 40 water bodies developed across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar, aligned with the objectives of Mission Amrit Sarovar.

The initiative addresses the seasonal mismatch between water availability and agricultural demand in Ladakh. Farmers face shortages during the crucial sowing season despite substantial snowmelt and glacial runoff at other times.

By storing water when available for use when needed, the project aims to support irrigation, sustain agricultural livelihoods and strengthen long-term water security.
