President of India Droupadi Murmu arrived in Lisbon on Sunday, marking the start of her four-day State Visit to Portugal and the Slovak Republic from April 7 to 10. This is the first visit by an Indian President to Portugal in 27 years, the last being by President K.R. Narayanan in 1998, according to the President’s Secretariat.
President Murmu is visiting Portugal at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. On Monday morning, she was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the iconic ‘Praça do Império’ in Lisbon, where she was received by President Marcelo with a Guard of Honour.
Describing India-Portugal relations as historic and enduring, President Murmu noted that the bilateral ties have continued to grow stronger over the years, reflecting mutual respect and cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
Following the ceremonial reception, President Murmu held delegation-level talks with her Portuguese counterpart, focusing on strengthening collaboration in areas such as trade, education, culture, technology, and renewable energy.
After concluding her engagements in Portugal, President Murmu is scheduled to visit Slovakia at the invitation of Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini. Her upcoming visit to Slovakia will be the first by an Indian President in 29 years.
