President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the ‘Ageing with Dignity’ event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on Friday. Organised by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the event marked the launch of several key initiatives aimed at the welfare of senior citizens.

On the occasion, the President virtually inaugurated senior citizen homes, launched a dedicated welfare portal for the elderly, oversaw the distribution of aids and assistive devices, and witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Brahma Kumaris organisation.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu emphasized that respecting elders is an integral part of Indian culture. She highlighted the strong emotional bonds between children and grandparents, noting that elders serve as emotional anchors in families. “Elders too remain physically and emotionally healthy when they see their family flourishing,” she said.

She underlined the critical role senior citizens play in society, especially in today’s fast-paced and competitive world. “Their wealth of knowledge and experience can help younger generations navigate life’s complexities. Old age is also a time to reflect, grow spiritually, and lead a meaningful life,” the President noted.

President Murmu stressed that senior citizens are both links to the past and guides to the future, and it is the collective duty of society to ensure they live with dignity, purpose, and engagement. She expressed satisfaction over government initiatives that aim to empower the elderly and promote their active participation in society.

Calling for a national commitment to the happiness and well-being of senior citizens, the President urged all citizens to value their presence, cherish their wisdom, and ensure they feel respected and included.
