President, Vice President extend Diwali greetings; urge eco-friendly celebrations

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President CP Radhakrishnan on Monday extended greetings to citizens on the occasion of Diwali, urging people to celebrate the festival safely, responsibly, and with compassion towards the underprivileged.

In a post on X, President Murmu said, “On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Indians, both in India and across the world.”

She added, “This festival of joy is also an occasion for self-reflection and self-improvement. It is an opportunity to help and support the deprived and the needy, and to bring joy into their lives. I urge everyone to celebrate Diwali safely, responsibly, and in an environment-friendly manner. May this Diwali bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to all.”

The President noted that Diwali symbolises the triumph of good over evil and conveys a message of mutual affection and brotherhood. “The festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, Diwali gives the message of unity and harmony across the nation,” she said.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also conveyed his greetings, describing Diwali as a celebration of the triumph of goodness and knowledge.

“On the auspicious occasion of Deepawali, I extend my warm greetings and hearty wishes to all Indians and friends of India, both in the country and abroad. Deepawali celebrates the triumph of goodness over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It is a time when values of generosity, charity, and inclusivity become profoundly evident as we extend our support to the needy and underprivileged,” the Vice President said in a message posted on X.

He further urged citizens to adopt positivity and Dharma, not only for individual well-being but also for the nation’s progress.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated over five days beginning with Dhanteras. On this day, people purchase jewellery or utensils and offer prayers. The second day, known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali, is followed by the main Diwali day when devotees worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity.

The fourth day is observed as Govardhan Puja, and the festivities conclude with Bhai Dooj, when sisters pray for the long and happy lives of their brothers, who in turn give them gifts.
