Prime Minister Modi visits Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque during Brunei visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan on Tuesday as part of his landmark visit to Brunei. This visit marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Southeast Asian nation, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.

Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed with a ceremonial reception, where he expressed his enthusiasm for strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in enhancing commercial and cultural connections. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said, “Landed in Brunei Darussalam. Looking forward to strong ties between our nations, especially in boosting commercial and cultural linkages. I thank Crown Prince His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for welcoming me at the airport.”

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan. The chancery, designed with a blend of traditional Indian motifs and modern architecture, reflects India’s cultural heritage. The complex features lush landscaping, elegant claddings, and durable Kota stones, creating a serene and welcoming environment.

The inauguration ceremony included the lighting of a lamp and the unveiling of a plaque, followed by an interaction with members of the Indian community in Brunei. Prime Minister Modi praised the Indian diaspora for their role in fostering strong bilateral relations, noting their contributions as a “living bridge” between the two nations. He acknowledged the significant impact of Indian professionals, particularly in Brunei’s healthcare and education sectors, where around 14,000 Indians currently reside.

In a heartwarming moment during the event, Prime Minister Modi interacted with a young girl who presented him with a painting depicting the Indian Tricolour alongside an image of the Prime Minister. The gathering, filled with people waving the Tricolour, warmly applauded the interaction.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted Brunei’s importance as a partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. It emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and traditional ties between the two countries, which have fostered a friendly relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive bilateral discussions with Brunei’s leadership, exploring new areas of cooperation and further strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
