Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reiterated India’s stance on the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that the issues must be resolved through peaceful means. PM Modi affirmed India’s readiness to offer all possible cooperation in pursuing peace and stability in the region.
The Prime Minister stated that India’s efforts are rooted in humanitarian priorities. “I have been in constant touch with you regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have said earlier, we believe that problems should be resolved peacefully. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability, and all our efforts prioritize humanity. India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in the times to come,” PM Modi said.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since February 2022. Both nations, in a joint statement following their annual summit in Moscow this July, stressed the importance of resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. They expressed appreciation for mediation efforts and emphasized the need for peaceful resolution in line with international law and the UN Charter.
During his remarks, Modi highlighted the close coordination between India and Russia, reflected in his two visits to Russia over the past three months. He said that the annual summit in Moscow had further strengthened bilateral cooperation. “Our Annual Summit in July has enhanced our collaboration across all fields. In the last 15 years, BRICS has developed its own distinct identity, and now many countries are eager to join it. I look forward to participating in the BRICS Summit tomorrow,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister also announced the opening of India’s new consulate in Kazan, calling it a step that will deepen ties with the Russian city. “I express my heartfelt gratitude for your friendship and warm hospitality. It is a great pleasure to visit a beautiful city like Kazan for the BRICS Summit. India has historical connections with this city, and the opening of our new consulate will further strengthen these ties,” he said.
PM Modi’s visit to Russia comes as part of his participation in the 16th BRICS Summit. In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to close cooperation within BRICS, calling it a key platform for addressing global development, reformed multilateralism, climate change, and economic cooperation. He said that BRICS plays a vital role in building resilient supply chains and fostering cultural and people-to-people connections.
PM Modi also referred to the recent expansion of BRICS, which has added new members to the group, enhancing its inclusivity and global agenda. “Building upon the Annual Summit held in July 2024 in Moscow, my visit to Kazan will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. I look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders as well,” he added.
On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi is expected to hold additional bilateral meetings with other world leaders.
